1950s Orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment was covered by the NHS when it started in 1948. This led to a huge demand for treatment as previously treatment had been very expensive and out of reach of the majority of people.
Expansion
Palatal expansion is used in cases of a narrow palate to help align the teeth and jaws. Expansion screws can be placed in removable, fixed and functional appliances and work to widen the roof of the mouth.
Early Orthodontics
“Among those individuals whose head are long shaped, some have thick necks, strong members and bones; others have strongly arched palates; thus teeth are disposed to irregularity, crowding one on the other and they are molested by headaches and otorrhea.”
Early Orthodontic Consultants
On 19th September 1949 the Western Area Committee of the South West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board decided to recommend that ‘an orthodontist of consultant status be appointed in the Bournemouth area with laboratory facilities at his disposal and that this appointment be advertised forthwith.’
A System Of Dental Surgery – Sir John Tomes
Sir John Tomes was a prominent dentist in the 19th century. He had a practice in London and was influential in establishing the LDS and the Dentists Act of 1879.
On Irregularities of the Teeth – Charles Gaine
Gaine’s regulating device, published in John Nutting Farrar’s book ‘A treatise on the irregularities of the test and their correction’ published in 1888.
