EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT – 2010
1. VLE
The primary focus of the Education Committee over the last year has been the VLE. All of the module authors were selected in December 2009 and were asked to provide an overview of their module for the March 2010 Education Committee meeting. The majority of the module outlines were received and reviewed at that meeting – I must offer a huge thank you to David Bearn and Karen Drage for undertaking this task with me as there were only 3 of us at the meeting and I think we finally finished at about 8pm! I provided feedback to all of the authors after that meeting and also asked them if they would provide a small section of their module, including one of the interactive elements, by May 2010. This was partly to “keep momentum going” and partly so that each of the module authors could get some inspiration from what others have planned.
Completed modules are gradually filtering through now. Three modules are completed and uploaded and currently being peer reviewed. One module is completed and has been sent to Alice Breton to be converted to Moodle format and one module is almost ready to be converted to Moodle format.
I have spent some time working on the security/ patient confidentiality aspects of having images on the VLE and met with the MPS to discuss this further. I have produced a patient information leaflet and consent form which the MPS have looked at and appear to be happy with. They also advised that I produced a flow diagram illustrating how security is protected at each stage in the process from actually taking the photos to the point where they are uploaded on the VLE – I have also produced this and will place it on the BOS members’ only section of the BOS website.
2. CPD
There were some initial difficulties to do with the production of CPD certificates and this led to delays in the development of CPD on-line. However, it looks as though these have now been overcome and we are moving forward with the CPD aspects fairly quickly now – many thanks to Les Joffe for keeping momentum going with this. The CPD element of the VLE will be launched at the conference in September and the first on-line CPD should be available to all members shortly after that.
3. Education courses
Karen Drage led the first BOS Education Course, with other members of the Education Committee, in June 2010. The course was fully subscribed and was an extremely successful event. It is intended to run the event again in early 2011.
