Mission statement

Orthodontic Practice Committee
Mission Statement September 2006

As we enter new times, it has been decided to relaunch GOSC as a new committee with greater representation from the groups within the society. The new committee has been called the Orthodontic Practice Committee, the new name designed to reflect that the fact that we have moved on from GDS and also that fact that in time there will be greater overlap between primary and secondary care, together with an increasing importance on private work.

It is essential that the Society continues to have a Committee with a remit to take care of the political interests of members. It must strongly liaise with the BDA, the GDC, and to build links with the DoH and other public and governmental bodies who control and regulate NHS and Private fees also the working conditions, in the interest of better patient care.

Responsibilities of the committee will include:

  • Representing BOS in continued liaison with DoH and CDO over PDS.

  • Representing BOS on the PDS Implementation Group

  • Representing BOS on the BDA’s GDPC

  • Representing BOS in continued meetings and liaison with the BSA over operational issues concerning PDS

  • Representing BOS on other committees concerned with PDS, future contracting of orthodontic services and future overlap between primary and secondary care.

  • Providing members with regular updates regarding PDS

  • Providing support and advice to members in relation to ongoing appeals

  • Providing support and advice to members in relation to future contract negotiations and tendering

  • Providing advice directly to PCT’s on issues relevant to future commissioning of orthodontic services

  • Helping co-ordinate LOC’s and Local Managed Clinical Networks on issues surrounding commissioning with special consideration of overlap between primary and secondary care

  • Support for members in their furtherance of private practice and liaison with bodies concerned with regulation of private fees.

  • To provide advice as requested by the Communications Committee for liaison with the media on matters involving provision of orthodontic care
