Job 1 – London Deanery 2010
Questions:
- DGH vs Teaching hospital. What are the differences and benefits / weaknesses of each?
- Have you done any research? Did you enjoy it? Is it important to do research as part of your MSc and why?
- What is clinical governance? What is an important element of CG? – I mentioned audit, which led to the next question:
- What is audit? Why is it important? What audits have you done and what was your level of participation?
- With the change of government, are you aware of any changes to the NHS? – were looking for an answer relating to the dissolving of PCT’s and setting up SHA’s.
- How would you handle a fellow SpR / FTTA who is persistently late to work and there is a clinic full of patients and you are on your own = then how do you handle them if they fail to improve = then what would you do if they come back from lunch smelling of alcohol?Ie: Whistle-blowing.
- The future of NHS orthodontics.
- How would you manage a consultant whose clinical practice is outdated?
- What would you do if on the first day of your Consultant post, a gentleman from the PCT walks into your office and says he does not think orthodontics is important and is planning to reduce your budget by 25% ?

Questions:
Presentation prepared in advance. Title given 2 weeks before Title "The Role of MCNs in Orthodontics"
- CV, prizes, discussion re CCST date and MSc.
- 18 week STT, Waiting list initiatives, role of auxillaries - therapists, DWSI.
- Teaching qualification - do I think it is necessary? Structure of the new ISFE exam. The place of research in a busy FTTA programme.
- DGH vs Teaching hospital. What are the differences? IOTN as a cut off point. Good idea?
- Role of the trainer. Appraisal. Discussion about study budgets and in house teaching versus going on courses in different places.
- Questions about MCNs in orthodontics. Overall structure. Local MCNs versus National ones.

Job 2 – North West 2008
Questions:
- I was asked to discuss my career since VT – what jobs I’ve done and what experiences I had gained from them etc
- Audit experience, clinical governance etc – my involvement in clinical governance
- Research experience, discussed my elective as an undergraduate briefly (on cleft lip and palate), and my recently completed DDS. Discussed RCT’s – asked to discuss any recent RCT’s which I felt were important - discussed Kevin O’Brien’s functionals RCT
- Asked about my opinions on the changes to the training pathways for medics – onto specialist training much more quickly compared to my own experience (GPT & 2 SHO jobs) – discussed advantages and disadvantages of short training pathways compared to the traditional training pathways.
- Asked to discuss the future of the NHS and how I thought orthodontics would be affected.
- There were a couple of other questions – but I was quite stressed and can’t remember the details! – The questions I’ve mentioned already were the more important ones

- Tell me how you think the recent NHS changes are going to affect the provision of orthodontic treatment.
- At what stage in your training did you feel able to work unsupervised.
- What would you do if there was no Consultant around and you had to make an important decision regarding a patient’s treatment which you did not feel confident making.

- ‘I have received an email this morning from my PCT Dental Lead Advisor who states that Mr X and Mr Y are willing to take over the hospital waiting list and existing patients. How would you react to this and what would you do considering Mr X is a general practionner with a special interest in orthodontics and Mr Y is a private GDP neither of them have M Orth or further training in orthodontics.
