UTG Study Day

Workplace Based Assessments

With the introduction of workplace based assessments for those StRs commencing orthodontic training programmes in October 2011, the UTG organised a study day at the BOS headquarters on 22nd March 2011. The majority of UK teaching institutions were represented. The day started with an introduction by Professor Nigel Hunt followed by interactive sessions on clinical evaluation exercises (CEXs), direct observation of procedural skills (DOPS), and case based discussions (CBDs) led by Simon Littlewood, James Spencer and Scott Deacon. The afternoon session was composed of interesting presentations by Karen Smith and Jeremy Brooks-Martin on the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme and the use of e-portfolios, and James Spencer on the use of multi-source feedback. The day provoked considerable debate and gave insight into the role of workplace based assessments for the new cohort of trainees. The meeting was closed by Dr Martyn Cobourne, and Professor Susan Cunningham was thanked for her work as the previous Chairman of the UTG. It was agreed that it was a very useful day and it has been suggested that a meeting for 2012 should take place around the same time next year.
