About the UTG

The University Teachers Group is a forum for those involved in the education of both undergraduate and postgraduate dental students together with support for continuing professional development. Although its members are primarily academics, NHS colleagues, consultants, specialist practitioners and community officers based in university dental hospitals and other trusts with a significant role in delivering teaching courses are also welcome.

The Main Teaching Hospitals with Orthodontic Departments are:

University of Birmingham, The School of Dentistry

University of Bristol, Oral and Dental Sciences

Cardiff University, School of Dentistry

University of Dundee School of Dentistry

Edinburgh Dental Institute

University of Glasgow Dental School

Kings College Dental Institute, London

Leeds Dental Institute

University of Liverpool, School of Dentistry

University of Manchester, School of Dentistry

Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry

University of Sheffield, The School of Clinical Dentistry

University College London, Eastman Dental Institute

Orthodontics is in a unique position in that the General Dental Council's document 'The First Five Years' (www.gdc-uk.org) no longer requires undergraduate students to carry out active treatment as part of their training. However, in the current public arena of reflective practitioners working from 'informed evidence based data', the provision of orthodontics requires both clinical and academic input. A robust academic framework is therefore essential if the specialty is to continue providing and developing the highest quality clinical care appropriate for the specialists of the future. It is anticipated that future curriculum changes will be supported by the University Teachers Group of the British Orthodontic Society.
