Accompanying Persons Programme
Monday 20 September – Half day walking tour of Brighton, special visit “behind the scenes” at the Royal Pavilion
Cost for morning: £30 including guided tour of the town and admission to the Royal Pavilion Minimum number: 12
09.00am Meet in the foyer of the Grand Hotel
09.15am – 10.45am Walk from the hotel along the seafront, the Old Town, including The Lanes but also further from the sea, the bohemian North Laine. Hear about Brighton’s past history from fi shing village to spa and then a seaside resort.
10.45am – 12.15pm The walk will take us to the Royal Pavilion. For 40 years it was the holiday residence of King George IV. The impressive interior Chinese décor was the backdrop of numerous parties but without a large number of servants working ‘behind the scenes’ the whole entertainment plans of the King would have collapsed. You will be taken along corridors the King himself might have never seen.
After the guided tour you might want to stay longer in the Queen Adelaide tearoom and walk through the building again at your own pace before making your own way back to the hotel.
Tuesday 21 September – Full day coach tour to Lewes, Alfriston and Seven Sisters
Cost for the day: £50 including guided tour and lunch
Minimum number: 12
09.00am Meet in the foyer of the Grand Hotel
09.15am – 09.45am Brighton to Lewes by coach
09.45am – 11.15am Guided tour of Lewes which has a history going back many hundreds of years. After the Norman Invasion, William de Warenne built a castle here. Our tour will take in the ruins of the castle, the narrow back streets of the town, and the White Hart hotel (known as the “Cradle of American Independence” where Thomas Paine forged his radical policies) and you will hear about how Rodin and the Kiss played their part in Lewes too.
11.15am – 12.00pm Free time to stroll around the town.
12.00pm – 14.00pm Drive to Alfriston and stop for a 2 course lunch and tea/coffee at the Star with a short walk around the village which used to be a smugglers’ haunt.
14.00pm – 17.00pm Drive through the South Downs National Park with various stops for short walks and photo opportunities at beauty spots such as Seven Sisters, Birling Gap and Beachy Head.
Drive back to the Grand Hotel in Brighton along the coastal road.
