Professor of Orthodontics collects Royal Honour from Palace

Bill Shaw receives CBE

Bill Shaw CBEBill Shaw, Professor of Orthodontics at the Manchester University School of Dentistry, attended Buckingham Palace on Wednesday 25 June 2008 to be presented with his CBE by Her Majesty the Queen for services to dentistry.

Professor Shaw leads the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre for Research on the Treatment of Craniofacial Congenital Anomalies – which is world's first such centre and is based at the University of Manchester

The CBE was awarded in recognition of the pioneering research into cleft lip and palate and related anomalies carried out by Professor Shaw and his team.

Professor Shaw has also been Clinical Director in the Central Manchester Healthcare Trust, is a member of the Medical Research Council Advisory Board and member of the Research Assessment Exercise, Dentistry Panel and is a member of the British Orthodontic Society.


The honour was applauded by the Chairman of the British Orthodontic Society, Iain Hathorn, who commented “Bill’s interests are varied, but he is best known for his work in establishing indicees of orthodontic treatment need which have been in clinical use for nearly two decades and his wide ranging work within the field of cleft care. In both these areas of influence he has been a driving force in making significant changes in the UK and internationally. His is a remarkable colleague, who is an able clinician, administrator, an outstanding researcher, teacher and communicator. The complete professional! Bill Shaw richly deserves the national recognition the CBE confers.”

Professor Shaw was accompanied to the ceremony by his wife Dr Gunvor Semb and his son and daughter.
