Supervision of Orthodontic Therapists

Guidance document

Orthodontic Therapists are a new, very welcome and valuable addition to our orthodontic team. Because they are a new resource, it is important and timely to remind members of some aspects of what constitutes a high standard of ethical working practice within the team. Issues of good practice have already arisen concerning appropriate levels of supervision of Orthodontic Therapists.

The BOS and the ONG (Orthodontic National Group for Dental Nurses and Therapists) has produced a guidance document to remind members of the circumscribed scope of Orthodontic Therapist training and the need for the presence at each appointment of the orthodontist or dentist. One of the three core aims of BOS is to maintain and improve professional standards in orthodontics in the interests of the patients in our care.
