Education

The Education Directorate will have overall responsibility for:

  • The Society’s activities in all matters relating to the orthodontic education of dentists and dental care professionals. This includes undergraduate training, vocational training, the postgraduate education of generalists, the postgraduate training of specialists in orthodontics and the training of DCPs
  • The Society is principally active in those educational initiatives which are outside the remit of the Postgraduate Deaneries, Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC), Royal Colleges and matters related to national policy setting. The Chair will however be responsible for ensuring that the Society is fully conversant with the educational work of such bodies as it affects orthodontic education
  • Specific responsibilities will include the Society’s role in the overall planning and success of the training of Orthodontic Therapists, Dentists with a Special Interest in Orthodontics, the provision of high quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD), the BOS Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and the educational benefits from the work of the Museum and Archive Committee
  • The committee will nominate one of its members to be a member of the SAC.

Sally Walker

I qualified in dentistry at Newcastle University in 1999. I undertook orthodontic specialty training in Newcastle and Middlesbrough, then completed my post-CCST training in Sheffield and Mexborough. I have been a Consultant Orthodontist at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle since 2010. Education is my special interest and I have a Masters’ degree in Clinical Education from Newcastle University, obtained in 2013. I am responsible for organising and delivering the orthodontic teaching programme for undergraduate dental students at UCLan Dental School. I am Training Programme Director for specialty training in orthodontics in the North East and Cumbria. I am also an examiner for the Membership in Orthodontics examination at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and Chair of the Board of Examiners for the MSc in Orthodontics at Newcastle University.
